First published in 2021, “The Wife Upstairs” is a contemporary retelling of the Charlotte Brontë classic, Jane Eyre. Written by American author, Rachel Hawkins, the story is transported from the north of England to the south of the United States (Alabama) and follows a modern version of Jane as she meets the recently widowed Eddie Rochester whilst walking dogs for the wealthy women of a gated community.

It has been a long while since I read a novel by Rachel Hawkins. I’m pretty sure the first and only series I’ve ever read by her was the Rebel Belle books, and I remember really enjoying those.
